Fr. Pratap Naik's Speech

Dear Friends,

To preserve, promote and seek justice for Konknni in Roman script, I had promoted the concept of establishing Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) in the name of famous Konknni lexicographer Msgr. Sebestiao R. Dalgado, at Piedade Institue, Panaji on 17 July 1988. Subsequently on 28 August 1988, at a meeting held at Loyola High School, Margao, Goa, DKA was formally established.

On 28 August 2012, DKA organized a public function at Ravindr Bhavan, Margao, to inaugurate its Silver Jubilee Year. Mr. Manohar Parrikar, the Chief Minister of Goa was the chief Guest. I was invited as a Guest of Honour. Benaulim M.L.A. Mr Caetano D'Silva was a Special Invitee. On this occasion in my speech, I placed before the CM five demands of people who use Konknni in Roman script. In the past, the present CM who was then the Leader of the Opposition had assured me twice in the presence of Late Ul'las Buyanv by saying "If my government comes to power, I will do justice to Konknni in Roman script". I have attached here my entire speech in Konknni. For the sake of those who do not read Konknni in Roman script, here below I have given the five demands which I had placed before the CM.

Demand 1: Every year Kala Academy (KA), Goa gives awards to a best book in Konknni (Devanagari script) and Marathi. A separate category must be created to give award to books published in Konknni in Roman script.

Demand 2: Whatever financial support and other facilities Goa government gives to Marathi Akademi should also be extended to Dalgado Konknni Akademi.

Demand 3: To perform Tiatr and other stage performances throughout the year, build Modern Ravindra Bhavans at Panaji Bus stand and in Mapusa.

Demand 4: Those who want to study and want to teach Konknni in Roman script as an optional subject from Standard I to XII should be given the necessary permission.

Demand 5: In the Official Language Act 1987 Konknni written in Roman script should be included and the injustice which is prevalent for the last 25 years should be eradicated.

Those who really love Konknni and Goa now should use their influence with the State Government, to fulfil these five demands of the users of Konknni in Roman script. We do not want alms but we demand our rights. We do not want sympathy but justice. We do not want mere words but words articulated into concrete actions. Now the hour has has come for all of us to preserve and promote our identity. Hence arise and act.

If you are convinced of these five demands kindly circulate this mail to Goa Ministers, Members of Legislative assembly (M.L.A), Members of Parliament (M.P.), government officials, government institutions, and to your friends. Together we can achieve what looks like a distant dream.
Fr. Pratap Naik SJ
