JoeGoaUk's Konkani Tiatr, VCDs, Films

This year, it will be the 37th All Goa Tiatr Competition organised by Kala Academy of Goa.

I remember in the past, it used to take place at KA's Open Air Auditorium where ticket was just Rs.5 (Now Rs.40)

In the year 2006, there were just 11 groups, Last year it was 21 and this year 2011 its 30 participating groups starting from 9th September and ends on 10th Novemebr 2011

Some of the regulars are:

Alfy arts production (divar) with wife, son and daughters, there are others familiar faces Seby- Loraine, Prasad etc. Can't wait to watch Seby-Loraine duet. At one time there was no duet and it was like something missing in the popular tiatr.

Britona Dramatic Academy with loads of Child artists with Camilo sisters, d'Silva sisters etc

Not forgetting the comedy duet by Hermizil and Rosalina

Our H Britton was also part of this academy and he was last seen in this competition in the year 2007/2008 (He died in 2009).

We now see another group within Britona under the name Serula Art & Culture Academy, Penha-de-France since 2009.

Kala Mogi Candolim with Cardozo family- Joao, Tomazinho, Irene etc, Shivanand Naik, Mathias Mascarenhas, Dynanesh, Maria Cardozo, Anthony Carvalho etc are some of the regulars.

Then we have Peter Vaz from Taleigao with Livia, Ezilda-Dorothy, Govekar, Custodio Cabral, Fr. Neville Gracias, Gloria, Betty d'Cunha etc. However, we now see two groups Sao Michael and Youth Creations etc

We have Eusico Fernandes (Sao Miguel Dona Paula) with Teotonio etc

Cyril Almeida with Agnes, Rosario Bothelo, Rumald, Clanifa etc

Agnelo de Borim (Margao) with Conceicao, Ivy, Suzet, Francis, Nazario, Rupesh jogle, Preeti, Dipti etc

Then we have groups from Merces/St. Cruz who are also regulars

Remembering Tiatrists of yester years

A special monthly programe organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 24th Aug. 2011 at TAG's conference hall, Campal, Panjim

Following tiatrist were born/remembered in August:

Alfred Rose, C Alvares, Saib Rocha, Felico Cardozo, Rosary Ferns, Minguel Rod & Francis Antonio Fernandes.

Saib Rocha

Saib Rocha one of the greatest writers and directors of Konkani tiatr stage was born on 23^rd August 1898. He was one of the few artistes who contributed to the development of tiatr stage along with Pai Tiatrist Shri. Joao Agostinho Fernandes. He wrote his first tiatr in 1916 and formed his own dramatic troupe ‘Union Jack Dramatic Troupe’. From 1916 to 1941 he scripted 31 tiatrs which were very popular. Some of his tiatr are ‘Romeo ani Juliet’, ‘Dubhavi Ghorkarn’, ‘Gupit Kazar’, ‘Mog ani Krim’, etc.

Celestinio Alvares popularly known as C. Alvares was born on 1^st August 1920. C. Alvares is a legend of tiatr stage who left no stone unturned to bring the standard of tiatr, its song and music to greater heights. Tiatr lovers lovingly called him ‘Ace Director of Konkani Stage’ and due to his versatility in singing duets, he was named ‘King of Duets’. He has written and directed more than 100 tiatrs some of which are ‘Nirddukay’, ‘Ankwar Vo Kazari’, ‘Jurament’, ‘Kednam Udetolo To Dis’, ‘Gõycho Mog’, etc. He was the hero of the two most popular Konkani Films ‘Amchem Noxib’ and ‘Nirmonn’.

Minguel Rod

Minguel Rod the greatest all rounder of tiatr stage was born on 10^th August 1924. A born tiatr artiste he achieved huge success in the promotion of tiatr, its song and music within a very short life span of 31 years only. He wrote and directed 27 tiatrs some of which are ‘Gorib Sezari’, ‘Gorchem Kestanv’, ‘Lembddo Santan’, ‘Civil Marriage’, etc. He composed and rendered over 300 songs some of which can be still heard through All India Radio on HMV records. Minguel Rod died at a very tender age just 31 years there creating a vacuum on tiatr stage.

Alfred Rose

Alfred Fernandes popularly known as Alfred Rose to his fans was born on 05^th August 1932. Alfred Rose is known to his fans in different names such as ‘Golden Voice of Goa’, ‘Melody King’, etc. He was not only a writer, lyricist and singer but also an excellent musician.

He has many first to his credit. He has highest number of songs on records produced by HMV, Colombia and Young India. When the technology of cassettes appeared on the scene, Alfred Rose was the first to produce as many as 40 audio cassettes. He has also written and directed numerous tiatrs some of which are ‘Lakhpoti Novro’, ‘Dotor Advogad’, ‘Munis Vo Devchar’, ‘Director Saib’, etc. Alfred Rose is responsible to carry Konkani Song to each and every nook and corner of the world where Goans live.

Felicio Cardozo

Felicio Cardozo a freedom fighter, a journalist and a tiatr artiste was born on 30^th August 1932. He edited Konkani newspapers namely ‘Sot’, ‘Divtti’ and ‘Novem Gõy’. He has published books of short stories namely ‘Fulanchi Bhag’, ‘Jugar’, and ‘Nimnni Itsa’.

Being a lover of tiatr he wrote and staged many tiatrs some of which are ‘Apovnnem’, ‘Mhojea Ixttak Lagon’, “Bhatt Khoim Bhattkar Khoim’, etc. He was a source of information about tiatr, its song and music.

Francis Antonio Fernandes

Francis Antonio Fernandes a musician of tiatr stage was born on 09^th August 1944. He served the tiatr stage by being a member of live musical band as a drummer. His drumming abilities have helped in the improvement of the quality of music. He has played drum for numerous tiatrs written by great artistes of Konkani stage namely C. Alvares, Prem Kumar, Aristides Dias, C. D’Silva, Premanand Lotlikar, etc.

Rosary Ferns

Rosary Ferns a prominent personality of tiatr stage was born on 16^th August 1962. He was dedicated artistes who served tiatr stage sincerely for almost 30 years. He was very much instrumental in promoting Goan tiatr in the Gulf especially in Kuwait where he was employed. He was a good lyricist and a singer too. He has many audio albums to his credit
